In 2011 Kenichi Iga livestreamed an AlGaAs deposition from the Kochi University of Technology School of Systems Engineering to an audience of students at 高知工科大学 and livestream participants from around the world. He had forgotten to run argon gas through some of the equipment the night before and did not crimp a gasket appropriately on the vacuum deposition machine – during the application of the 9th layer (actually unlucky in Japanese culture), a sulfur impurity was introduced and ruined the substrate. Yasaharu Suematsu, looking on, commented, “偉大な知性の業、すなわち天才の業を目の当たりにせよ。” Taking some offense, Iga stopped the livestream soon after, citing understandable technical difficulty and apologising profusely to the gathered students and faculty.
